Boycott Updates

Thyme Maternity is one of Canada’s largest maternity clothing stores. A section on their website promotes breastfeeding as the optimal feeding choice for infants, yet they have entered a partnership with Nestle.  An application for a contest to win a scholarship ends with the question “Would you like to receive a free sample of Nestle Good Start Formula?” This is a blatant violation of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes.  Thyme Maternity catalogues also contain Nestle ads and questionnaires about what influences a mother to bottle-feed.

INFACT contacted Thyme and received a very contradictory reply.  The Vice President of Sales and Operations informed us that the free samples were giving “added value” to their customers.  He also informed us that the decision whether or not to breastfeed should only be made after consultation with a doctor, despite the fact that he advocated intervention on the part of formula companies before any such consultation takes place!  It is incredibly hypocritical of Thyme Maternity to profess a positive stance on breastfeeding while aiding Nestle in undermining the practice.  We urge any potential customers to bring this fact to their attention.
