Baby’s First Months What Do We Do Now?

Video review: Canadian Pediatric Society video, 59 min, New Parent Productions, 1997.
Although this video bills itself as providing “solid, practical, how-to information, that helps mothers feel confident about childcare,” the segment on breastfeeding is strewn with “too many negative statements,” writes our video reviewer, INFACT member, Janet Zablocki. According to the CPS video:

Breastfeeding is the same as bottle feeding: “Whether you breastfeed or bottle-feed, the bonds of love grow stronger and stronger with every drop.”
Time consuming: “Since you’ll be spending many hours breastfeeding.”
Not everyone can do it: “Since breastfeeding is not always automatic for all mothers and babies.”
Doesn’t always work: “Breastmilk doesn’t always flow right away.”
Tiring: “One way to get rest while feeding.”
Stressful: “the more relaxed you are, the more milk you make.”, “relax and you’ll produce the milk your child needs,” and again “the more relaxed you are, the more milk you’ll produce.”
Restrictive: “everything you eat will affect your baby. Avoid alcohol, caffeine and smoking.”
Uncomfortable: visuals of positioning are awkward and uncomfortable.
As a finale the mother is told to express her milk so dad and the whole family can bottle-feed. Isn’t that what they really wanted her to do in the first place?
