Breastfeeding Week 1996The response to the World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) theme of Breastfeeding Empowers Women was overwhelming positive. Our WBW '95 Kit has received rave reviews. We will continue to have available the items in the kit which can be used anytime to promote breastfeeding inthe community; these are the purple stickers and cards which say "Mother-Baby Friendly - You are welcome to breastfeed here". It is always the right time to promote a more hospitable breastfeeding climate in your community!
The theme for 1996 will be Breastfeeding: A Community Responsibility. This theme has lots of potential to emphasise the role of the community in supporting women to provide the best for their infants. If you have any thoughts on resources you would like to see available for this year, drop us a line or give us a call, we'd love to hear from you. INFACT can be reached through email at info@infactcanada.ca Or you can contact us at (416) 595-9819.
We asked for feedback on the date of World Breastfeeding Week. many people report that the date of August 1 to 7 is not good for them. We are therefore recommending that World Breastfeeding Week be celebrated in the fortieth week of the year, which falls the first week of october, and is symbolic of the fortieth gestational week. Many countries in Europe have already adopted this date. It has a number of advantages including being able to access schools which are closed for the summer, and fewer people are away onvacation at this time, so more people will be available for more activities! We will continue to have our Kit ready for eadly May. It is not too soon to begin your plans for WBW 96!
