ubversion of breastfeeding
to capture emerging markets is nothing new to Nestlé. A
recent article in the Financial Times of London, reports
that the UK charity, Save the Children, has requested the Chinese
government investigate Nestlé's violations of the International
Code in the Yunnan province. According to Save the Children, Nestlé
"is sending large quantities of free samples of baby milks
to local hospitals." In a survey of seven hospitals in the
provincial capital, Kumming, every mother was given a package
of Lactogen on hospital discharge. In typical fashion, Nestlé
denied the charges and ordered a full and independent investigation.
However, the UK charity refuted many of Nestlé's dismissals
and questioned the independence of the Nestlé investigation
team.
