Battlefords Union Hospital Turns Thumbs Down on Free Formula!

enior management at Saskatchewan's Battlefords Union Hospital made the decision to stop accepting free formula from Ross Products Division of Abbott Laboratories as of February 1, 1996.

Since 1994, Battlefords Union has been working to become a Baby-Friendly Hospital. After publicly announcing their Baby-Friendly intention, they set up a Hospital Committee, which is currently working to complete the self appraisal questionnaire. Also, Battlfords Union is drafting a breastfeeding policy, and other hospital practices are being reviewed to comply with breastfeeding support principles.

In a communique to INFACT Canada, Ms. Terry Cann, Chairperson of the Battlefords Inter-agency Breastfeeding Advisory Committee, writes:

"The specially funded Breastfeeding Support Services project ('95 to now) has been instrumental in demonstrating the value of promotion, protection, and support for breastfeeding.... Research and evaluation of this special project is currently nearing completion."

We look forward to more good news from Battlefords Health District!
