CANADA CELEBRATES WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK 2005

Breastfeeding and Family Foods:  Loving and Healthy

Feeding other foods while breastfeeding is continued

OCTOBER 1-7, 2005

Join INFACT Canada and the Canadian breastfeeding community in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week 2005.  This year’s theme - Breastfeeding and Family Foods: Loving and Healthy – emphasizes the importance of breastfeeding children to two years and beyond, and the gradual transition to local, healthy family foods. Fact sheets are included comparing costs of family foods to commercial packaged baby foods; identifying baby’s curiosity and interest in solid foods and the importance of starting after six months of exclusive breastfeeding.

To help celebrate and organize community events, INFACT Canada has prepared a kit that highlights this year’s theme.  It is both a useful tool for action and a source of valuable educational material.  It contains fact sheets such as:

·        Foods across Canada:  A Map of Canada’s Regional Foods

·        Exclusive Breastfeeding:  Vital to a Baby’s Health

·        Complementary Feeding:  Starting Solids

·        What does the International Code say about the Marketing of Complementary Foods?

·        Cost/Nutrition Comparison of commercial baby foods and family foods

It also includes resources such as:

• Pin-up poster - Breastfeeding and Complementary Foods: Getting a Solid Start on Life!

• Colouring activity sheets for young children - Family foods and fun

• Brochures - Exclusive Breastfeeding:  Vital to a Baby’s Health and Complementary Feeding:  Starting Solids

• The Global Strategy on Infant and Young Child Feeding
