Margaret Chan new Director-General of WHO

Dr. Margaret Chan of China has taken office as the Director-General of the World Health Organization. Dr. Chan was appointed to the position in November of 2006, after the sudden death of Director-General Dr. Lee Jong-Wook in May. She said that she hopes her administration will be judged on the effectiveness of its impact on two populations: women, and the people of Africa. Her term extends until June 30, 2012. Dr. Chan told staff, "I believe these are optimistic times for health. Never before has our work enjoyed such a high profile on the political agenda."
