Newfoundland Does it Again! The Association of Registered Nurses of Newfound land (ARNNL) have produced a set of excellent guidelines, Registered Nurse Competencies to Protect, Promote and Support Breastfeeding. "Registered nurses who work with childbearing families have a professional responsibility to ensure they are able to competently meet the learning needs of individuals related to infant feeding and provide supportive care to breastfeeding mothers and their families" notes the preamble. The guidelines approved by the Council in May of 2000, list required competencies under the headings: knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgement and critical resources. Important points to note are adherence to the International Code and the CNA Code of Ethics for RNs. A bibliography as well as web site resources are included. The ARNNL can be contacted at their toll free number: 1-800-563-3200. |
