Nestlé knowingly sells contaminated formula

Nestlé has had millions of liters of its formula pulled from Italian shelves after it was found to be contaminated with ink.  Italian police have reportedly seized 30 million liters of the company’s Nidina and Mio brands and Nestlé is now issuing a recall of its products in France, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. The seizure and recall were prompted by the discovery of isopropylthioxanthone (ITX), a component of the ink used on packaging, in a Nestlé product in September.

Although the contamination was discovered in the coastal town of Ascoli two months ago, amazingly Nestlé CEO Peter Brabeck knew about it as early as the beginning of summer. He claims that he discussed the issue of ITX contamination with European Union and Italian health officials in July, who he says authorised him to continue selling the product. The Italian health ministry completely denies the claim, and has stated its intention to sue Brabeck over the “completely false” statements.

Nestlé and the EU state that there is no immediate health risk to infants because of the low amounts of ITX found in the formula. But the EU has ordered tests to be done on the product to determine its effect on infants who consumed it over prolonged periods.
